With the average price per gallon in the U.S. reaching $3.86 this month, it’s no wonder President Obama is talking about energy issues. The increase of 49 cents a gallon over the past two months alone translates to a $35 billion price tag for the broader economy – that’s just in direct costs that do not include related cost increases for transportation and other goods.

Fortunately, the President seems to understand this. Beginning with his State of the Union address in January, the President has stressed the importance of an all-of-the-above approach to energy – which indeed we will need to fulfill our long-term energy and security needs.

TransCanada Corp. said Thursday that construction of the southern leg of its proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline won't be accelerated by a White House promise of fast-tracked federal approval, a presidential commitment that observers suggested could affect permitting of the full line from Alberta.

Speaking at the Cushing, Okla., delivery point for U.S.traded crude, Obama said his plan to expedite the 780kilometre stretch of Keystone XL from the oil hub to Texas refineries was a "common sense" move that would reduce a Midwest crude supply glut.

Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer, who's been a big advocate for the Keystone XL Pipeline, says it's not a matter of "if" it gets built, but "when."

Schweitzer says he's pleased to see President Obama move forward with the southern portion of the project from Cushing, Oklahoma to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.

The governor went on to say he's willing to wager that the northern section of the pipeline will be approved sooner than later.

President Barack Obama firmly defended his record on oil drilling Thursday, ordering the government to fast-track an Oklahoma pipeline while accusing Congress of playing politics with a larger Canada-to-Gulf Coast project.

Deep in Republican oil country, Obama said lawmakers refused to give his administration enough time review the controversial 1,170-mile Keystone XL pipeline in order to ensure that it wouldn't compromise the health and safety of people living in surrounding areas.
